Smolenski FamilyFor a skier who grew up on the icy hills of Michigan, Colorado is a dream come true, says Dr. Andrew Smolenski who recently joined Peak Anesthesia & Pain Management at Centennial Medical Plaza.  Dr. Smolenski grew up in Grand Rapids, MI.  He attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate studies and then he was off to medical school at Wayne State University.  Dr. Smolenski completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at University of Colorado Health Science Center (UCHSC). His fellowship training at UCHSC in anesthesia gives him a strong background in the diagnosis and management of spine and musculoskeletal disorders.  He hopes to put these skills to work immediately and is happy to be settled in his new practice.

After graduating from college, Dr. Smolenski moved to Aspen.  He spent his days bussing tables and working at the ski school.  His outdoor and recreational lifestyle led him and his wife, Erin, a middle school math teacher whom hails from Michigan, to Colorado to raise their family. They have a 4-year-old daughter and 16-month-old triplets (two boys and a girl!). Before they had kids, Dr. Smolenski and Erin would spend their weekends in the mountains hiking and camping.

"Needless to say, we haven't done that in a long time," laughs Dr. Smolenski.  "When we're brave, we will take everyone out to dinner!"

A couple times a year, the Smolenski family packs up their car, and drives to Michigan.    Dr. Smolenski is one of seven kids and most of his family still lives in Michigan.  He is the only physician in the family.

"Most of my family is in law, so I am the black sheep as a physician," he says.

Self-described "huge Michigan Wolverines football fans," he and Erin used to travel at least one time each fall to attend a football game.  They haven't had a chance to do that lately, but hope to continue the tradition as the kids get older.  He also hopes to take a day or two to ski on the Colorado slopes this winter as well.  Maybe someday we will see the whole Smolenski family on the slopes.  All in good time Dr. Smolenski, all in good in time!
